Keep the group together

Roadcrew shows you every car you are driving with: who is ahead, how far away they are, and who is falling behind. One button talks to all of them.

It is an iOS app for people who drive their cars together for fun — a convoy of two to eight cars on a car meet run, a Sunday route or a weekend away.

Who is ahead, and how far

The list is sorted by who has come furthest along the road. The number next to a name is how far you would have to drive to catch them, following the road. Not a straight line across the map.

If a number turns red, that car is losing the group. You see it before they have to call and say so. Other apps give you four dots on a map. Nothing tells you who is ahead, or who is about to lose the group. You have to work it out yourself, while driving.

Hold the button and talk

Everyone in the group hears you. No calling, no waiting for anyone to answer, and nothing is recorded or saved. When you let go, it is gone. Only one person can talk at a time. Two voices at once is just noise, and you are busy driving.

Everyone knows the next turn

Cars pass each other all the time, so the one in front is not always the one who planned the route. Everyone gets the same directions, each with their own distance to the next turn. Your usual map app can keep running on top.

Lock the phone and drive

You should not have to stare at your phone while you drive. Roadcrew keeps running for the whole trip with the screen off, or with your map app open in front of it.

The short answers

How many cars can drive together in one convoy?

Two to eight. That is the size of group that actually goes out for a drive together — a car meet run, a Sunday route, a weekend away — and it is the size the running order stays readable at.

How is this different from sharing our location on a map?

A map of dots does not tell you who is ahead or who is about to lose the group; you work that out yourself, while driving.

Roadcrew sorts the group into a running order, front to back, and puts the distance to each car next to their name.

Is the distance to the other cars a straight line?

No. The number next to a name is how far you would have to drive to catch them, following the road.

On a winding road a straight line across the map is not just wrong by a bit — it puts the group in the wrong order.

Do I have to stop using Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze?

No. Roadcrew gives every car the same route and the next turn, each with their own distance to it, because the car in front is not always the one who planned the route.

Your usual map app can keep running on top, and Roadcrew keeps going behind it.

Can I lock my phone while we drive?

Yes. You should not have to stare at your phone while you drive. Roadcrew keeps running for the whole trip with the screen off, or with your map app open in front of it.

Is the push-to-talk voice recorded or saved?

No. Hold the button and everyone in the group hears you; let go and it is gone. Nothing is recorded and nothing is stored.

No. Your phone works the numbers out itself, so the summary — the standings, the speeds, the climb — is ready the moment you park, with or without signal.

Is Roadcrew a tracking app?

No. It is made for a group of people who have agreed to go for a drive together. It is not a family-safety product and it is not a find-my-friends app.

When is Roadcrew out, and how do I try it?

It is coming to iOS and it is not finished yet. Test invites go out in the Discord first, and that is where testers say what is broken.
